If you are a video creator, you can use the video clips tool to easily cut out engaging segments from your long-form videos on YouTube and instantly publish them as separate videos. This tool is available to all creators and is available for all videos.
Create video clips
- In YouTube Studio, select Content
Videos
.
- Open the existing video that you’d like to create a video clip(s) from
.
- Select Clips and then click “Create video clip” in the upper right-hand corner.
- Select which part of your existing video you’d like to extract into a new video clip. There are 3 ways to do this:
- Option 1: Select the text from the transcript that you’d like to use for your video clip and then click “Confirm selection.” You will see the selected segment highlighted in the video timeline.
- Option 2: Click on the word in the transcript that you want your video clip to start with, click “Set as Start,” click on the word in the transcript that you want to end with, and then click “Set as end.”
- Option 3: Enter the timestamp that you want to start your video clip, click the “Set as Start” button in the timeline, then enter the end timestamp or move the drag handle to where in the timeline you want to end your video clip and click “Set as end.”
Note: The transcript in the video clips tool is the transcript for auto-generated captions. You can edit the auto-generated closed captions in the Subtitles menu for the video, but not in the video clips tool.
- Once you’re satisfied with the video clip, select Create Draft in the upper righthand corner. You will be able to preview the video clip in the upload dialog.
- To add an intro or outro video to your video clip click on the “Add intro/outro” button and select an eligible video

- Complete the upload dialog as you would on any other video.
Find a video clip you create
Video clips are like any video on YouTube. To find the video clips you create go to Content Videos
. You can also find all the video clips made from a video by going to that video’s Details page and then clicking the Clips tab.

Should I add video clips I create from full episodes of my podcast to my podcast playlist?
We recommend only having full episodes in your podcast playlist.
Can I link a video clip I made manually to the source video?
Yes, just add a link to the source video in the description of your video clip.
Can I make Shorts with this tool?
At this time, the tool only creates 16:9 videos.
Will there be a copyright penalty from re-using or re-uploading my content as a clip?
No, you will not be penalized for using your content in a video clip. Learn more information about our policies and re-used content.
What’s the difference between this tool and the existing clips feature?
This tool helps you create new videos that are published to your channel. The existing Clips feature helps users from your community clip a small portion of a video or live stream and share it with their friends. This clip links back to the original video, and is not a new video on your channel.
